Third Dimension
Brutalist Architecture uses concrete in its pure form to create epic constructions that draws focus to their arithmetical, clean, rigid forms. The denseness and severity of the concrete material used so solidly gives the structures an unwavering dominating presence, but subtle details within the concrete, the negative spaces and the sharp geometric shapes of the structure play wonderfully with light and shadow. The collision and reaction of light against and through these forms breaks the monotony of the material achieving a vast array of atmospheres, from hard distinct tonal differences between each surface to soft atmospheric diffusions of light.
Brutalist architecture and its play with light directly influences the color palette of these explorations; tones ranging through white, grey and black, but experimenting with material qualities; texture, density, opacity and transparency; the solid concrete versus the ephemeral light.
